Basic methods. There are two main methods for making soap from scratch: cold process and hot process soapmaking. The above described in basic steps is the cold process. The hot process differs in step 2 – after trace, the pot is put on the double boiler, so that the temperature of soap keeps at around 60-70°C for around 1-2 hours.
Tip: Some additives can cause problems when making liquid soap. A popular way to make liquid soap thicker is to use brine in place of your water in your lye solution. If I buy my soap making oils in 16 oz sizes a 2 pound loaf of cold process soap costs me more than the melt and pour. IF I add fragrance it gets very pricey.
